The Thermal Exhaust Chimney

November 2004

Chimneys and thermal exhaust ports are practically indistinguishable to a man that's been crawling in and out of them for countless centuries. It is through these exhaust ports that good stormtroopers get their Christmas presents, but unfortunately for them, this particular one leads directly to the reactor. While historians contend that it was actually Luke Skywalker who destroyed the first Death Star, this image presents evidence that it was a well-intentioned gift which sealed the fate of that first battle station. This scene was created as a sort of Star Wars Christmas joke. At the time I didn't really know how to use radiosity and used the Monte Carlo radiosity instead of the much faster Interpolated radiosity (interpolated mode is faster with Motion Blur turned on, a higher tolerance such as 0.4 to 0.6, a higher minimum evaluation spacing and fewer rays per evaluation). Radiosity wasn't even needed in this scene. I modeled everything within 2 hours and set the scene up in an additional hour. Then I waited 4 hours for it render. That is a lesson learned.

Who really blew up the Death Star?
